Von 19 war er zudem Direktor des Royal Institute of International Affairs.Zwischen 19 arbeitete Toynbee an seinem epochemachenden 12-bändigen Hauptwerk A Study of History (dt.: Der Gang der Weltgeschichte), in dem er die Bedingungen von Entstehung, Aufstieg und Verfall von Kulturen umfassend analysierte. Gleich anschließend übernahm er eine Professur für byzantinische Geschichte an der University of London und 1924 den Lehrstuhl für Internationale Geschichte an der London School of Economics and Political Science.
